The Cigliano di Sopra estate was established in the 14^th century. Located in Chianti Classico’s Northwestern zone of San Casciano Val di Pesa, just south of Florence, the biodiversity at Cigliano di Sopra is immense. Today the estate boasts 8 hectares of vines spread over 12 plots, along with 17 hectares of olive groves and 8 hectares of woods throughout the property. Young, passionate duo Maddalena Fucile and Matteo Vaccari, friends from enology school, run the estate, which has belonged to Fucile’s family for the last century. Until 2016, when Maddalena and Matteo produced their first vintage at Cigliano di Sopra, the grapes were sold to neighboring producers. Maddalena and Matteo brought experience from working with Raj Parr and Sashi Moorman at Domaine de la Cote, as well as local estates including Montevertine and Fontodi. Production at Cigliano di Sopra has grown over the 10 years since their first vintage, but is still small, maxing out today at 25,000 bottles. The property is certified organic and they farm regeneratively, using biodynamic practices and follow the lunar cycle. 

Their Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva ​“Vigneto Branca “ and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione are all distinct reflections of both their locality in San Casciano — a part of the region defined by sandy, stony soils, and a warmer, more Mediterranean climate — and their vision of the future for the region — one that prioritizes freshness and drinkability. Depending on vintage, whole bunches are included in varying quantities. Fermentations take place in neutral barrels without addition of yeasts or sulfur and the wine is kept on its lees for extended periods. The resulting wines are extremely lifted, floral, aromatic, and spicy — with a mineral backbone and distinct freshness while maintaining a serious core of fruit. The attention to detail and ambition of Matteo and Maddalena is undeniable and proves the best is yet to come from this exciting young duo.
