Cantina Maugeri

Location:
Etna, Sicily
Maugeri is a small family estate located on the Eastern slopes of Mount Etna in the area of Milo. Patriarch Renato Maugeri, a native of Etna, and his three daughters Carla, Michela and Paola re-established their family winery with a mission to sustainably produce wines of Etna that express the extreme terraces where their vines are planted.
The 7 hectares of albarello vines stretch among 83 terraces, between Contrada Praino and Contrada Volpare at elevations of 700 meters above the sea, nestled in an amphitheater between the Milo forest below Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. The fertile volcanic soils in Praino and Volpare are sandy and incredibly soft. In the heart of the Etna Bianco Superiore zone, Maugeri focuses on producing incredible Carricante.
Farming at the estate is biological and all done by hand by a team of 6 full time vineyard team members. Famed Etna enologist Emiliano Falsini oversees all winemaking operations at Maugeri. Three Etna Bianco Superiores are produced from the estate: Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Volpare, Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Volpare ‘Frontebosco’, and Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Praino ‘Frontemare’. Frontebosco is a small south facing parcel within the Contrada Volpare planted in 2015. Frontemare is carricante from the more sandy, tuffaceous soils of the contrada praino soils of the estate. Cattaratto plantings account for 0.5 ha of vines, producing an fresh, aromatic expression of the indigenous variety while the small area of nerello mascalese vines are used exclusively for production of the crisp, coastal etna rosato.
