Lapo Berti

Location:
La Morra, Piedmont
Lapo Berti is one of one. A winemaker who has devoted years of his life working as many harvests as possible to master the craft of winemaking worldwide, diving as deep as possible in the intricacies and nuances of inspiring winemaking techniques before settling down in Piedmont to launch his own project. Born in Tuscany and holding Australian residency, Lapo’s passion for wine ignited in his early twenties and sent him on a twenty-year quest across the world’s great wine regions: Italy, Australia, Burgundy, New Zealand, Sonoma, Oregon and beyond. He started his career at the greatest winery of Chianti Rufina, Selvapiana, in his native Tuscany, before embarking on a nomadic path that took him to the legendary Roberto Voerzio in La Morra, Nicolas Potel and Michel Picard in Burgundy, Cameron in Oregon, and Stephen Pannell in McLaren Vale, with countless other stops between seasons. Each experience sharpened his instincts and reinforced the perfectionist habits that define him today. Eventually, he anchored himself in Piedmont as the full-time winemaker at Enzo Boglietti, and it was here that his enduring love for Nebbiolo truly took hold.
In 2012, Lapo settled in La Morra to launch his personal winery, leasing prized Nebbiolo parcels across the commune, all of which he farms himself. In 2022, he expanded south to Dogliani, adding plots of Dolcetto and Barbera. In total, Lapo farms just 2 hectares of vines. All vineyards are cultivated organically, with careful attention to building living soils rich in plants, insects, and microorganisms that sustain a naturally balanced environment for the vines.
In the cellar, his touch is equally deliberate and gentle. Grapes are hand-harvested and fully destemmed, with long fermentations driven exclusively by indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel tanks and open, neutral wooden vats. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, with only trace amounts of sulfites added. The result is Nebbiolo and Barbera in their most honest form: a pure, unhurried expression of grape, place, and vintage.
